R&D Chemist (Personal Care)

Position Title: Chemist

Department: Research& Development (R&D)
 
 Reporting Structure: R&D Group Leader and R&D Manager

Organizational Relationships: Communicates with Sales/Marketing, Customers, New Business Development (PMs), Process Engineers & Production Personnel.

Basic Function: The development and formulation of products as requested from customers aligned with specifications and customer requirements.

Responsibilities:

1.Develop new formulation submission batches independently in lab for client approvals based on customer brief, compliance requirements, and product specifications adherent to established timelines.

2.Maintain accurate real time entries on lab notebooks to ensure accuracy and completeness and associated electronic data bases.

3.Review formulas for accuracy and compliance to briefs,blacklists, regulatory, and any other requirements with Sr. Chemist, Group Leader and/or Manager.

4.Ensure stability and efficacy according to project requirements.

5.Issue product specifications as required and maintain relevant data throughout each product’s development.

6.Identify and understand variations in product, equipment and procedures which may affect results.
 

7.Verify formula reproducibility before initial production run with lab scale up.
 

8.Work with Process Engineers to set up procedures for pilot and production scale-up.
 

9.Maintain working knowledge of all stages of finished goods production and all pertinent documentation.
 

10.Collaborate and interface with internal partners on formula transition from R&D to production as needed.

11.Work with production personnel, when required, to determine adjustments or corrections to 1st production batches.
 

12.Code new raw materials and make decisions as to raw material substitutions.
 

13.Maintain current knowledge of new raw materials and technology via meetings with suppliers & seminars.
 

14.Work within all R&D systems and processes including but limited to Access, Optiva, PV, etc.
 

15.Maintain adherence to cGMP’s (current Good Manufacturing Procedures), GLP’s (Good Laboratory Procedures), and SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) for the personal care industry.
 

16.Carry out any additional assignments as directed by R&D Management.
 

Qualifications:

1.Bachelor of Science or higher in Chemistry and/or a combination of vocational training, education and experience that is equivalent to the employment standards listed above and provides the required knowledge and skills.

2.A minimum of two years industry or related experience in the personal care, hair care and skin care 
3. A minimum of three years industry or related experience in a Research and Development Internship, Junior Chemist or Chemist role.
