Overdose Prevention Trainer

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care and Treatment (BADUPCT) works to reduce morbidity and mortality related to alcohol and substance use among New Yorkers through contracting and oversight of prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery and support services; policy analysis and development; epidemiology, surveillance, and evaluation; development and dissemination of treatment and management guidelines; harm reduction initiatives; public and provider outreach and education; and community involvement and interagency collaboration.

The Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution Unit (OENDU) develops and implements initiatives to reduce and prevent opioid overdose deaths in New York City. The Unit provides naloxone, training, and technical assistance to over 311 Opioid Overdose Prevention Programs (OOPPs) across New York City. OOPPs provide community-based overdose prevention, recognition, and response education and distribute naloxone directly to community members.

POSITION OVERVIEW 

BADUPCT seeks one Spanish Speaking Overdose Prevention Trainer to provide overdose prevention and response trainings and naloxone distribution trainings in both Spanish and English and support all logistics for the distribution of naloxone at both training events, and public-facing events or community and institutional partners on behalf of BADUPCT’s Overdose Prevention Program, with the goal of preventing overdose deaths in New York City.

This position is housed at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Long Island City.

RESPONSIBILITIES  

Under general direction from the Overdose Prevention Training Coordinator, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Overdose Prevention Trainer will:

• Plan, schedule, and implement overdose prevention trainings for internal and external partners; coordinate requests for trainings and make referrals to external trainers as appropriate

• Provide trainings and minor technical assistance and support to Opioid Overdose Prevention Programs (OOPPs) on naloxone distribution and data reporting

• Assemble naloxone kits to be dispensed in trainings and maintain records for all kits dispensed

• Provide support for packing and mailing of naloxone kits and training related materials and maintain appropriate records for all kits and material mailed and dispensed

• Recruit community-based organizations working with target populations to become new OOPPs

• Contribute to the development of new trainings, educational materials and resources aimed at preventing unintentional/accidental overdose deaths and assist with the translation of those materials into Spanish

• Work closely with Bureau leadership and staff to collaborate on and coordinate community-based overdose prevention activities

• Provide administrative support to the Bureau’s Overdose Prevention Programs, as needed

QUALIFICATIONS 

The Overdose Prevention Trainer will have knowledge of substance use issues and harm reduction practices and theory, including syringe exchange, overdose prevention and education for HIV and Hepatitis C prevention.

The Overdose Prevention Trainer will have a mastery both English and Spanish (written and verbal) and will be able to conduct trainings successfully in both languages.

The successful candidate will be sensitive to various ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic conditions. They will be able to work independently, have excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills, and be a flexible team player.

They will have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, with proficiency in Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, and virtual platforms such as Zoom Webinar, Microsoft Teams and WebEx.

• Annual Salary range is $69,000 - $71,000.

WORK SCHEDULE

9:00am – 5:00pm

Overdose Prevention Trainers will occasionally need to perform essential functions of their role outside of their regular work hours to meet community needs and training demands.
